Music teaching in schools

I have been teaching in schools for more than 15 years. Over that time, I have developed a student-led approach, which encourages all students to develop their music skills in a creative, fun, and individual way.

My principles

My teaching is based on several fundamental principles:

  • Music lessons should be fun, led by student interests and bespoke to students’ individual skill levels.
  • Lessons should provide the opportunity for students to be inquisitive, imaginative and collaborative, whilst developing technical skills.
  • Students should be encouraged to take on the role of the teacher to support their peers in developing their skills.
  • I believe all children are capable composing their own music containing chords and a tune by following a set of simple musical rules.

My teaching uses a combination of the students singing, playing the glockenspiel, recorder, keyboard as well as developing their own compositions. Lessons are about developing student skills as a singer and instrumentalist through performing teacher-led songs and composing their own music.

Working with you

I work with students from Reception to GCSE, with lessons tailored to meet the needs and priorities within your school. I am able to cover all aspects of the National Curriculum for Music.

Alongside the development of students' creative and critically evaluative musical skills, my pedagogical approach also supports the development of students' skills in literacy, mathematics, team working and communication.

I tailor lessons to suit the skills and interests of the students. To do this I provide students with the opportunity to experiment so that they can demonstrate what they can do in a fun and risk-free environment. I then flexibly adapt lessons to meet the skill level and interests of the students, within the overall goals of the lessons.

Every child, every class and every school is unique. My music lessons reflect this.
